Reflection Paper

Reflection Paper
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is a very cool course for me. I think it is useful tool that let me learn so much. The computers as tools – Online reference tools. I will apply it correctly in the future.

l  Writing
There are different types of dictionaries, including Bilingual dictionaries and Monolingual dictionaries. I use Google Dictionary the most often, because it is convenient. The next, I sometimes use Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, I feel its printed page make me comfortable.

When I am writing, I always have a little trouble with vocabulary or grammar. In English, certain words are often used together. Knowledge of collocations is vital for the competent use of a language. A grammatically correct sentence will stand out as ‘awkward’ if collocational preferences are violated. From now on, I have a lot of tools that I can choose to use. Among these tools, the CANDLE interests me. It can look up many special vocabularies in English or in Chinese. It solved all my problems.

By the way, Google syntax is important. We can use search operators and other punctuation to get more specific search results. If we don't think the punctuation will give us better results, we will see suggested results for that search without punctuation.

l  Listening
When the course proceeds to the section, I am excited about it. Because my listening ability is not good. I think ESL Podcast is an excellent learning resource, which can make my hearing ability be better. The ESL Podcast is systematic, which speak slowly first time and explain the phrase or the vocabulary. Then, it speaks the dialogue one more time. At this time, we can practice the dialogue again, and pay attention to the phrase or the vocabulary. I think I love this learning resource!

The Ted Talks is quite good except ESL Podcast. The Ted Talks has lots of topics include life, technology, news, etc. It can make us gather in many crops.

l  Pronunciation & Speaking
English is not only writing, listening but also speaking. When we have a conversation to others, the pronunciation is much important.

My ET - It is a web-based program employing automatic speech analysis system (ASAS) to identify the words spoken into the recording device, and it can analyze the speech on pronunciation, pitch, timing and emphasis. It can practice the pronunciation, even make us converse better. And my pronunciation has improved.

l  Reading
Open Course Ware (OCW) is an educational initiative developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to make the core teaching materials for all MIT graduate and undergraduate classes available at no cost to Internet users around the world.

Before this course, I have not heard about any open course ware before. But I flip through the website, I found it is systematic.  There are lots of kinds of topics that we can choose.

We can choose a topic of our interest. Also can choose what you want to include in the course. For example online textbook, lecture notes, video lecture etc.

Thank teacher, Sally. In this semester, I have learned a lot of online tools. I will change my language learning behavior that I will try to apply all the tools. Not anymore use the Google Dictionary.

The influence of this course is numerous.

#6 Talks on TED

Talks on TED
Birke Baehr: What's wrong with our food system

http://www.ted.com/talks/birke_baehr_what_s_wrong_with_our_food_system#t-229509

Why i think it is worth listening ?
Because recently, our food system is a hot talk.  For example, the swill oil, pesticide residue of  tea leaves, and  many years ago of clouding agent event , etc.

This speaker , Birke Baehr , is a eleven years old boy , who argues unreal picture of big-box agriculture as he outlines the case to green and localize food production .

The food system is very important for our life. In a generation , many vegetables become  transgenic products, but in the this talk , he says should be an organic farmer instead. And that way we have a greater impact on the world .

We can all make a difference by making different choice, by buying our food directly from local farmers. Some people say organic or local food is expensive, but  this boy's response  is  much interesting . He says we can either pay the farmer or we can pay the hospital.

#5 STORY IN MY LIFE

STORY  IN  MY  LIFE

Two years ago , i became a freshman of  National Taipei University of  Business. I am very happy that i can study in this university. But it means i have to leave for Taipei by myself.

Initially, i thought i can not live by myself. But day after day , i tried to do something with myself. For example, i tried to eat dinner , taking out the trash , doing a lots of thing all by myself.

When it comes to  at that time now, i think that is a excellent decision for me. It proves that i can live by myself,  i can do anything by myself.

I think that decision is a dot connecting to my life in my mind.

#4 Steve Jobs' speech

Steve Jobs' speech

I admire him for his courage to drop out. And luckily he find what he want to do. Maybe we are confused what can we do in the future, but we  hope  that we have much courage to find what we love like him. That's just what we expected.

Jobs says: Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don' lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that i loved what i did. You have got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.
This section is a inspiration to me.
When we are in the troubles, we must not to be negative. We have to lift up our head .

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life."Jobs says.
We don't waste our time on unimportant things. When we live each day as if it was our last, someday we will mos certainly be right. And most important, have the courage to follow our heart and intuition.

Stay  Hungry. Stay Foolish.
